CAPT. MAINE, SERVING WITH THE ARMY CAME TO AUGHNACLOY AS COMMANDING OFFICER OF THE DUBLIN CITY MILITIA IN 1807.
AFTER HIS 2 YEAR TOUR OF DUTY IN THE AUGHNACLOY AREA, HE RETURNED TO ENGLAND AND IS BELIEVED TO HAVE FOUGHT WITH WELLINGTON DURING THE PENINSULAR WAR. WHEN HE RETIRED FROM THE ARMY IN 1821, HE RESOLVED, WITH GREAT HASTE TO GO BACK TO AUGHNACLOY AND BUILD A MODEST HOUSE, WHERE HE AND HIS WIFE COULD SPEND THEIR REMAINING YEARS IN PEACE AND TRANQUILITY.
AFTER HE DIED IN 1845, HIS FAMILY, NOT WISHING TO LIVE IN IRELAND, SENT A SERIES OF LAND STUARTS TO MANAGE THE ESTATE.
